The project includes:

  • A new softwood pulp mill in Äänekoski, Finland

The production capacity is estimated at 1.3 million tons annually, compared with today's 0.5 million tons. The mill will be one of the largest in the northern hemisphere. The project will impact on the surrounding rivers and lakes, as well as give rise to increased traffic in and around Äänekoski. The new facility will be completely energy self-sufficient. There are also plans to use the softwood pulp to develop new bio-based products in cooperation with local companies. In addition to the pulp mill, the project also includes expansion of transmission lines, new bridges and roads in Äänekoski and expansion of Vuosaari harbour.

An environmental and social impact assessment has been approved by the regional Center for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY). There are no sensitive natural areas directly adjacent to the plant. The Äänekoski Bioproduct Mill is classified as a category A-project.
