Transmission lines for offshore wind power, Germany
The Swedish Export Credit Agency (EKN) has received applications for guarantees for financing equipment to three transmission projects, BEI interconnector Bornholm-Germany, Ostwind 4 and LanWin 6.
The projects will integrate electricity from offshore wind farms into the electricity grid of the German transmission system operator 50Hertz.
BEI interconnector Bornholm-Germany connects Bornholm and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and thereby integrates Danish offshore wind energy into 50Hertz’s transmission grid. Ostwind 4 will transport electricity from a wind farm area northeast of Rügen to Stilow in Germany. LanWin 6 will transport electricity from wind farms in the North Sea to Germany. An environmental impact assessment (EIA) is available for Ostwind 4. BEI is at an earlier stage and the start of construction for LanWin 6 is several years in the future, and therefore, available information is currently more limited.
EKN has provisionally classified the project as Category A. The potential social and environmental impact of the project mainly relates to the impact on biodiversity.
EKN conducts Environmental and Social (E&S) due diligence of the project based on the existing EIA. EKN is engaged in close dialogue with involved parties to ensure that risks are managed in line with international standards.
The information was published on EKN's website, www.ekn.se, on July 4th 2025. Comments on the project can be made within at least 30 days to info@ekn.se. This procedure is in accordance with the OECD Recommendation on Common Approaches for Export Credit Agencies (ECAs), the so-called “Common Approaches”.
