The current SGR project involves construction of approximately 541 km of electrified railway between the cities of Dar es Salaam and Dodoma, largely following the alignment of an existing metre gauge railway built during the early 1900s. The new railway will be used for both passenger and freight traffic. The SGR Project constitutes a first step in realizing the Government of Tanzania’s intention to construct a total of 1,219 km of connecting Dar es Salaam to Mwanza - located on the shore of Lake Victoria.

The SGR Project has a preliminary classification as category A and its environmental and social risks and impacts relate to the following key areas: Soil, water resources and noise; Biodiversity and management of natural resources; Land acquisition and resettlement; Community health, safety, security and livelihoods.
