This project involves the construction of electrified railway between the towns of Makutopora and Isaka and the tracks largely follow an existing railway line built in the early 1900s. It is part of a national effort to develop the country's railway network and the infrastructure will be used for both freight and passenger transport. The SGR-project will also improve links with neighbouring countries, in particular Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The SGR Project has a preliminary classification as category A and its environmental and social risks and impacts relate to the following key areas: biodiversity, water, land acquisition, resettlement, security and the impact on local communities.
