Ethiopian Railways Corp. (ERC), railway project in Ethiopia

The project includes approx. 400 km of new railway and is part of a larger national railway investment in Ethiopia. The present route is of strategic importance as it will tie together the northern, central and eastern parts of the country.

The project includes:

  • Railway development between the cities of Awash and Weldia in Ethiopia

The trains will run on electricity. The railway is expected to have positive effects on the environment and also contribute to social development. For example, diesel-powered road transport is expected to be transferred to railway. Most of the area where the railway line will be drawn is sparsely populated. In a few places, the railroad will be drawn through or adjacent to sensitive natural environments.

The Ethiopian railway project is classified as a category A-project. Additional information on the environmental and social impacts is available in the following documents:

1. Environmental and Social Impact Assessment Reports, 2011-2012.
2. Independent review of the Ethiopian Railway Project against environmental and social performance standards, June 2014 (revised version).
3. Environmental and Social Action Plan, draft, February 2014.
